Today, I attended a seminar arranged by the Quality Office of our University on behalf of the fledgling Swansea Academy of Learning and Teaching. The subject was Research and Practice Led teaching and very good it was too! The work of colleagues in Classics and Psychology in particular was very inspiring. Unfortunately, the jewel in the university's crown, the School of Engineering, rated 8th in the country for its research in the recent RAE exercise, was represented by a grand total of two people. Me, considered research inactive by my head of school, and the Dean. It would appear that the beating research heart of the university is unable to provide leadership in research led teaching dispite all the rhetoric that acompanies our literature and strategic plans!
